Trout Beads...Who Uses Them???

Well i know at least one guy on this site that utilizes trout beads with good success and was curious on who else here has experimented with them? Being a fly fisher, most of the time anyway, i'm partial to pom eggs and glo bugs but the variety of beads available is definitely worth mentioning. P-line and Trout Beads make some good imitations, so who here has tried them and whay is your opinoin of them?

I tried beads a couple of times a few years ago and only caught a couple of suckers and a few chubs on them. This year I decided to really fish them hard and so far they are paying off. I will post more as the season gets going.

I finally heard back from a feild officer regarding trout beads. He didnt say there was a legal distance from bead to hook but, he did say I would have to add apiece of yarn or pipe cleaner or something of that nature to keep them legal.

I called the indiana dnr and no one had even heard of trout beads or the tecnique. I then called a fly shop close to my home town and they said as far as they know there is no such reg. yet. I did however leave a voice mail with a field officer, and he has yet to return my call. Until then, I will use a 2'' space just to be safe

Hey kev watch out for the distance between your hook and bead. I don't know your regs. , in most states its no more than 2inches. In fact NY is still debating if this is even legal. but i think the guides assoc. is trying to get the reg. changed for this. When i went to AK ,beads were about 90% of our arsenal. They have using them out their for years and AK fishing and game regs. post that 2inches is the max. Anything else is considered snagging.

hey phillip, I use trout beads quite abit.I think they work great. You can even use them under a float. They work the best when fishing pressure is up. The set up is real easy....I typically use a long leader of 7ft or more.. I then put a bead on before tying my hook, tye the hook and slide the bead so its 2-3 inches above the hook and break a toothpick in both sides of the bead. In the water they have a good profile, they come in alot colors and few sizes. When the fish hits the egg it slides down and almost sets the hook itself. Trout Beads are not always my go to lure, but when everyone else is throwing eveything but the kitchen sink the small profile of the single egg is irresistable. I believe beads can even be casted on a fly rod. Im not much of a fly angler so Im not sure what could happen if they hit your rod during your cast. I would recomend them to any trout/steelhead/salmon fisher. One flaw is I spent about $40.00 to get a good variety[troutbeads.com] They will be with me on next outting.......Kevin
